The heritage of La Fontaine

For over 20 years we have been welcoming guests from all over the world to our family home. A family guesthouse with a rich history.

How it started

When the family made their first trip to South Africa, they immediately fell in love with one of the oldest buildings in Hermanus: La Fontaine. A beautiful house where they would come often and many memories have been made.

To transform La Fontaine into a family home, a renovation was needed. Sketches were made on a piece of scrap paper and the renovation could begin. A beautiful family guesthouse has been realized with respect for the history and style of the house.

One of the oldest buildings in Hermanus

La Fontaine is one of the oldest houses in the fishing village of Hermanus.

Hermanus was founded in the early 1800s by a Dutch traveler called Hermanus Pieters who had happened upon the area when searching for better grazing for his livestock.

Hermanus and its History

The history of Hermanus dated back to the 1800's. Hermanus was founded in the early 1800s by a Dutch traveler called Hermanus Pieters who had happened upon the area when searching for better grazing for his livestock.

The first permanent settlers were the family of Mr. J Michael Henn, who in 1857 with 4 wagon carts, 5 sons, 5 daughters and their various husbands and children, pitched camp right next to the waterfall. They started the fishing industry here and built the first permanent buildings along the present day Marine Drive.
